Analysis of intermittent supply systems in water scarcity conditions and evaluation of the resource distribution equity indices

2007

Generally, urban water distribution shortage situations are solved by introducing discontinuous service and rationing the available water resources. This approach is widely adopted, not only in developing countries but also in developed ones, for solving short term scarcity conditions which can be caused by unpredicted drought periods. Intermittent distribution has the advantage of requiring small financial efforts but it leads to network operating conditions that are very far from the usual design ones. With the aim to analyse and describe the water supply network behaviour in intermittent conditions, a network hydraulic model has been set up in which both user and manager dependent regula…

Does higher datarate perform better in IEEE 802.11-based multihop ad hoc networks?

2007

Due to the nature that high datarate leads to shorter transmission range, the performance enhancement by high datarate 802.11 WLANs may be degraded when applying high datarate to an 802.11 based multihop ad hoc network. In this paper, we evaluate, through extensive simulations, the performance of multihop ad hoc networks at multiple transmission datarates, in terms of the number of hops between source and destination, throughput, end-to-end delay and packet loss. The study is conducted based on both stationary chain topology and mesh topologies with or without node mobility. From numerical results on network performance based on chain topology, we conclude that there is almost no benefit by…

Cost-Effective Congestion Management for Interconnection Networks Using Distributed Deterministic Routing

2010

The Interconnection networks are essential elements in current computing systems. For this reason, achieving the best network performance, even in congestion situations, has been a primary goal in recent years. In that sense, there exist several techniques focused on eliminating the main negative effect of congestion: the Head of Line (HOL) blocking. One of the most successful HOL blocking elimination techniques is RECN, which can be applied in source routing networks. FBICM follows the same approach as RECN, but it has been developed for distributed deterministic routing networks. Although FBICM effectively eliminates HOL blocking, it requires too much resources to be implemented. In this …

On the Optimization of Self-Organizing Maps by Genetic Algorithms

1999

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the research on the genetic optimization of self-organizing maps (SOMs). The optimization of learning rule parameters and of initial weights is able to improve network performance. The latter, however, requires chromosome sizes proportional to the size of the SOM and becomes unwieldy for large networks. The optimization of learning rule structures leads to self-organization processes of character similar to the standard learning rule. A particularly strong potential lies in the optimization of SOM topologies, which allows the study of global dynamical properties of SOMs and related models, as well as to develop tools for their analysis. Hierarchies of …

Enabling Soft Frequency Reuse and Stienen's Cell Partition in Two-Tier Heterogeneous Networks: Cell Deployment and Coverage Analysis

2021

Heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) are one of the key enabling technologies for fifth generation (5 G) networks. In HetNets, the use of small base stations (SBSs) inside the coverage area of a macro base station (MBS) offers higher throughput and improved coverage. However, such multi-tier base station deployment introduces new challenges, e.g., (i) All users experience significant inter-cell interference (ICI) due to frequency reuse, (ii) SBS associated users experience severe MBS-interference due to higher MBS transmit power, and (iii) MBS coverage edge users receive lower signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) due to longer distances. To address the aforementioned challenges, this wor…

Significance of channel failures on network performance in CRNs with reserved spectrum

2016

It is well understood that in wireless networks, channel failures, which are typically caused by equipment or power failures as well as intrinsic features in radio transmissions, such as fading and shadowing, can easily result in network performance degradation. Therefore, fast recovery from channel failures is an important measure that should be incorporated with those networks. Consequently, in a cognitive radio network (CRN), channel failures can cause significant performance degradation in both primary and secondary networks. Instead, retainability, i.e., the capability of providing continuous connection for users must be guaranteed even if a significant network element is disrupted. In…

Validation of a Short Form of Job Crafting Scale in a Spanish Sample

2018

AbstractApplications of job crafting are widespread in the professional practice. In an attempt to measure this phenomenon, Tims, Bakker and Derks (2012) developed a Job Crafting Scale based on the Job Demand-Resources model (JD-R) and validated it in a Dutch sample. However, its application to other cultural contexts presented some difficulties. The present work aimed to validate a shorter version of scale by Tims et al. (2012) in a Spanish sample (n = 1,647). The data were randomly split in two independent subsamples (Sample 1: Explorative; Sample 2: Confirmative). The exploratory factor analysis showed a three-factor structure. Through a confirmatory factor analysis, the four-dimensional…
